Dry Skin Products & Remedies for Summertime and Wintertime Skin
According to Ayurveda or the “science of life,” we are to nourish and protect our skin differently from one season to the next for optimal health (and in my opinion, comfort!).
During the winter months, our skin is wrapped under many layers of clothing. We are indoors more often than not, thus exposed to dry heat from the furnace and very little sun, so we need dry skin care products and dry skin remedies. Ayurveda recommends that we use oils and creams to nourish the dry skin.
An added bonus is the light layer of protection from the chaffing of clothing. An infusion of warming herbs like rosemary, thyme, juniper or amber can be added to our body products. We are to abstain from hot showers, as dry skin remedies, as it depletes the oils from our skin, causing more dry, flaky and cracking skin.
Summertime however, requires a different venue. Ayurveda recommends lighter clothing and cooling herbs. We are outside, exposing ourselves to more sun. Perhaps some of us are indoors with the air conditioner, most of the day. Dry and flaky skin can result from cold, forced air but usually summertime skin is more oily and prone to acne, so using dry skin care products is also beneficial in the prevention of these skin problems.
A lotion and/or water spritz with cooling flowers and herbs like camomile, rose, vetiver, mint, lime and coconut can offer nourishment and at the same time, protection, and is the best dry skin care treatment. A non-talc powder made with the herbs also provides protection from chaffing. We are to abstain from once again, hot showers. A tepid to cool shower with a gentle exfoliant is recommended instead.
Ayurveda has been practiced in India for centuries as medicine, a lifestyle, a way of living. It offers a few simple techniques to bring comfort, nourishment and protection to our every day, every year, every season.
