Neem? Unless you are from South or Southern Asia, this unfamiliar sounding name is a mystery. But there is no mystery in the power it has against mosquitos, skin inflammations and even gum disease…just to name a few.

Neem (Azadirachta indica) is an evergreen tree found all across India, Burma (Myanmar) and most of South Asia. Neem oil is most commonly used in medicinal and farming products. Now neem has crossed over to beauty products. There is no mistaking the bitter scent of neem. The triglycerides and large amounts of triterpenoid compounds is what gives neem it’s bitterness. It can best be described as a cross between peanut oil and garlic. Don’t let that deter you though from it’s wonderful benefits!

Summertime and mosquitos are ubiquitous. A natural alternative to chemical bombs on your skin is neem oil. Infused with complimentary essential oils, neem oil repels mosquitos better than all bug sprays combined. Apparently, even mosquitos don’t like the bitter taste. I have even seen neem branches and leaves decorate a dinner table to keep pesky bugs out of our food! Also because of it’s bitter property, neem is good for skin inflammations caused by sunburns to insect bites to psoriasis and eczema, and neem oil shampoo is also widely used.

Recently, I have seen neem oil shampoo, soap and cream, all made with neem. Even toothpaste! Again, neem’s bitter and antibacterial properties have been proven to reduce swelling and inflammation of the skin. In India, locals brush their teeth by breaking off a small branch of the tree. Acne? A drop of neem oil will reduce any swelling or skin inflamations.
