Dry and cracked lips is a common known issue for many people, especially for those of us who regularly have dry skin issues. While we use lotion and moisturizers for our face and body, our lips require something a bit different. The best way to deal with this is by wearing natural lip balm or vegan lip balm. And while you can buy lip balm almost anywhere, vegan lip balm can be a bit hard to find. So why not make natural lip balm yourself? Here is how:
Get the ingredients first. You will need a hard wax, such as candelilla or soy, (beeswax is NOT vegan), essential oils, naturally flavored extracts, and olive oil (or cocoa butter). You can find most of these products at your local health food store, and you can purchase the wax at a craft store like Michael’s. Next you’ll need the right kitchen tools like a microwave, microwave safe containers, spoons, and lip balm tins (these can also be found at a craft store).
Once you’ve got all that, then you can start. Take about one ounce of hard wax and place it into the container, the heat it in the microwave for 15 to 25 minute intervals until the wax thoroughly melts. Once you’re done then you can pour it into another microwave heat safe container. Remember to stir the wax. You can add the extras like essential oils or natural flavored extracts, and by adding colors you can even create your own vegan lipstick. Continue to stir for awhile to prevent the oils from separating, (this takes about less than 5 minutes), now pour the liquid balm into the tin container and let it set until it solidifies as it cools off.
Its easy and fun to make your own vegan lip balm. Have you tried it?
