Bug bites…the ultimate annoyance that can ruin any evening. To alleviate the itching, burning and swelling without reaching for nasty creams and sprays that are lethal, reach for Tea Tree essential oil instead.

Melaleuca alternifolia or better known as Australian Tea Tree Oil (TTO) is native to Aboriginal tribes that used the crushed leaves to heal skin cuts, burns, and infections by applying the leaves to the affected area. Known for it’s anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties, TTO is a MUST in your medicine cabinet. TTO is also available in other products such as Tea Tree Oil shampoo, Tea Tree Oil Acne remedy, Tea Tree Oil soap, and more.

Having recently been bitten by a spider, I took two cotton swabs and dipped them into the TTO bottle and applied directly to the bites. I recommend doing a patch test on the inside of your arm (crook) with straight TTO and wait. Within 5 minutes, if there is no redness or reaction, you are safe to use at full strength. If there is sensitivity, wash off with a mild soap immediately. Then dilute TTO with a cold, expeller-pressed almond, apricot or grape seed oil. I recommend a 50:50 solution. Then test again on the other arm. If you prove to be very sensitive to TTO, then it is best to stay away from the other derived products such as Tea Tree essential oil shampoo, Tea Tree oil soap, Tea Tree essential oil acne remedies, etc.

TTO can be used as a preventative before going out. Make your own “bug spray” with a 60:40 solution. Rub on arms and legs 15-20 minutes before going out. Be careful to avoid eyes, mouth and nose.
