Olive oil. Strawberries. Sage. Lemon grass. Coconut oil. Mmmm….what taste bud doesn’t enjoy the tantalizing flavors? We can savor them in our mouths. And in our skin.

Yes, we can and are eating our soap. The epidermis (outer layer of skin) is the largest sensory organ of our body. It has the special task of communicating with our environment. It breathes, perspires, drinks and eats what we put on and in it.

What are we feeding our skin each time we bathe? Walk down any health and beauty aisle of our local co-op or Whole Foods and delight in the offerings, or surf the Internet for them. Soaps today are made with ingredients that go beyond cleansing. Many of the ingredients are nourishing, protective and/or calming.

Olive oil for example, has historically been used by the Romans in a sand and oil paste to soften skin. Lavender is a natural insect repellent as well as tension tamer. Chamomile is gentle and mild for sensitive skin. A combination of oats and essential oils do triple duty to exfoliate, lighten and provide anti-bacterial protection. The ingredients are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing.

The next time we bathe, let’s give our bodies a treat. Drink in the coconut, the rosemary, the ginger; the nourishment, the protection, the satisfaction. Your skin will thank you for it.
