Teenage Skin Blues & Tea Tree Oil Uses
Each day as my pre-teen daughter looks into the mirror, she winces at the sight of the acne populating around the tip of her nose. It’s a passage of life, I tell her calmly and sincerely. She winces even more and curses the hormones erupting through her tender skin. As the memories of my teenage years flood to me, I knowingly smile that my daughter is armed with more knowledge and insight about how to better care for her skin than I at her age.
Acne to a teenager is as horrific and disheartening as thinning hair in mid-life. We are not forewarned when, NOT IF, it will occur. However, we can take measurable steps to prepare ahead. Forget the benzoyl peroxides and synthetic masks that burn and peel delicate skin. Picking, plucking and general touching are no nos! All natural skin care products to the rescue! A simple regimen of twice daily washing oily t-zones with an astringent soap like tea tree oil followed by witch hazel toner is foundational. The uses of Tea Tree Oil are numerous, but in the case of acne the Tea Tree Oil uses its powers to both help prevent and treat acne. A careful swab around the sides of nostrils and around the chin with the witch hazel…and lastly, a dab of peppermint toothpaste (not gel) directly on the spot overnight to bring down the swelling.
My daughter may have years ahead of winces in the bathroom mirror and many all natural skin care products to choose from. Knowing that she is proactive with the simple regimen above will make those years just a little easier to bear; and eventually, come to love the skin she was born with.
