Global awareness of natural products

In my recent trip abroad to Malaysia and Thailand, I was on the look out for things natural and hand made. Very quickly, I found out just how big of a market share our pharmaceutical and beauty subsidiaries have made overseas. Perhaps I am more of an idealist than most, but I was expecting homegrown, local products to be more available than they were. Or simply, I just wasn’t in the right places.

Then I realized how much of a trendsetter we are here in the West. Natural beauty products that are locally grown and handmade are NOT our original ideas. Ancient cultures from the East (of North America that is!)  have used natural handmade soaps, body lotions, etc., long before us. But what we have done VERY well is the marketing and PERCEPTION of what it means to be clean and beautiful.

Perhaps that is something to take pride in. Perhaps this is a good awakening about how much MORE of an impact we can make on a global scale promoting products from plant-based products and there is much work yet to be done! As the famed phrase goes, “A small step for man…a giant leap for mankind.” Let our life examples set the pace…for here and abroad!
